Maple Tree Tapping for Sap
Each year at the end of winter, a few weeks of magic happen. Tree sap flows, bringing life from the roots back into the branches. Farmers across the northern US and Canada collect sap from their maple trees as they have for over two hundred years. abundantdesigniowa.blogspot.com/2024/02/tap-those-trees-with-video.html
You can also take part in this historical tradition right in your own backyard (or a friendly neighbors)!

Removing Root Suckers for Healthy Fruit Trees
Переглядів 129Рік тому
Branching and suckering of rootstocks is one way to lose your grafted variety from trees and you will be left with lesser quality fruit if any. Removing vigorous suckers is necessary for the health of the tree. This video demonstrates the pruning process on a grafted American Persimmon tree. The root suckers have an easier time growing at first as the graft scars take some time to heal complete...

    This is awesome! I'm going to try to build one this winter. Question: I am concerned about rats and rodents getting in. Are the gaps necessary around the structure? Or can it be fitted pieces so there are no gaps? If it's for aeration then I suppose wire mesh can be put inside. Thoughts?

    I also do this annually - but rabbits this winter have regularly been jumping over fencing - I noticed today 3 more of my hydrangeas (which were over 4 ft tall) were eaten off. So frustrating. Do you know if burlap would deter them? I’ve had 2 ninebarks, 1 yew, 3 hydrangeas eaten down this year. (in the summer i have to keep the chicken wire around anything I don’t want to lose - the rabbits even eat Hostas down the ground)

    Hiii. Does a root stalk have to come from a fruit plant to create another fruit plant? Or can it be a non- fruit tree that I later graft apple branches to? Thank you!

    • @jeffreiland8944

      Yes, an apple needs to use rootstock from an apple, etc. Plums, peaches and other stone fruits can use the same sometimes (many 5 in 1 trees are like this) I have heard of some people having limited success of pears on hawthorn.

    • @AbundantDesign

      It will be harder to keep leaves moist, and might not get as many to take, but worth a shot if you have time. Take this years growth and cut off sections with three or four nodes. Remove the lower leaves leaving the top pair/one, add rooting hormone to the base and stick in moist soil. I would mist often (several times a day if possible, at least before and after work) keep them in a bright space but no sun. North side of house, or inside a north facing window. The leaves could fall off, but you might still get new growth later if they root. Since we are kind of late for green cuttings, I'd keep them protected (~unheated garage) over the winter.

    Good idea, but you could simply put a collar (a bucket with no bottom) around your sucker, and fill with soil (scratching a bit the bark). Also, you can already graft at this stage (bud in summer, or other way in winter), you'll save 1 year! That's the nursery way :)

    • @AbundantDesign
      @AbundantDesign 3 роки тому

      It is difficult with an established tree you like. If you have one that is damaged or a failed graft you can try to clip the top off and that will encourage more lateral shoots. These can be layered like this, or you can tip the whole rootstock over and try to get each branch to root.

  • @ontheflyby270

    I've still not seen one video showing results after using these. What would be useful is to see some genuine grafts and not just random cutting cutting of wood... Do these actually produce successful grafts or are they just mass manufactured rubbish?

    • @AbundantDesign
      @AbundantDesign 3 роки тому

      They can at first, but they can crush the sticks, also the blades need to be kept sharp or it makes it worse. Here's the follow-up video to see how they did ua-cam.com/video/qVptprAd4YA/v-deo.html But I'd just get a decent knife and its about as fast with better takes.

      Yes, I did some with the tool and some with a grafting knife. While the blades were sharp I got good results similar to just the knife, however the tool blades dulled much quicker than the knife and grafts didn't take as well then. I could try to sharpen them and they would work for awhile again and good for classes where I want students to be as she as possible. But for myself, I just use the knife now as speed comes with practice...

    Love wood chips! When I do this to a large area I rent a hydraulic roto tiller to just rip up and shred that grass, then scatter some steer manure and chicken manure to make it try and grow underneath the cardboard and die out faster. It helps the wood chips start breaking down better.
